Weledeh Garden

The Weledeh Garden was a dream of Merril Dean, a past Principal of Weledeh School. The garden was built in 2010 and was first planted in 2011. It has 19 plots, most with an area of 22 square meters. The total garden area is 577 square meters. A plot map is available. This garden was made possible through generous donations from the City of Yellowknife, BHP Billiton, the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC), the TD Green Fund, and the Kimberlite Career and Technical Centre (KCTC). This garden is unique in that a "Garden Buddy" system is established in which student garden buddies take care of the 25% donation portion of each plot. The students are responsible for this portion of the garden, but Community Garden members are encouraged to keep their eye on it during the summer and water it, as students can't always water during the summer holidays.

To be able to garden at this site, gardeners must agree to be part of the "Garden Buddy" system, and they must obtain a Vulnerable Sector criminal record check from the RCMP since they may on occasion work with students at the school. There is no charge in Yellowknife for obtaining a criminal records check.

The student buddy and/or the Weledeh School Food Program are the priority recipients at this garden of the 25% food donation portion.
